AECOM to advance industrial decarbonization by delivering environmental services for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub
DALLAS (February 11, 2025) — AECOM, the trusted global infrastructure leader, today announced it has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, to provide environmental compliance support and prepare the programmatic NEPA Environmental Impact Statement for the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub. This project is part of the DOE’s grant-funded Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs Program (H2Hubs), which aims to decarbonize key sectors of the economy through $7 billion of investment in new, regional clean hydrogen hubs nationwide.
Jennifer Obertino, Senior Vice President, Global Energy Practice Leader, said :
AECOM stands as one of the world’s largest clean energy design and environmental engineering firms, and through our Sustainable Legacies strategy we continue to promote industry-leading innovations in decarbonization,
“We look forward to applying our extensive knowledge in environmental planning and permitting to assist the DOE in advancing CO2 reductions and implementing a new generation of hydrogen technologies.”
The primary objective of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub is to kickstart the development of a hydrogen ecosystem that promotes greater energy security and job growth in the region. This initiative aims to decarbonize various industries in the Pacific Northwest, including trucking, shipping, logistics, energy production, and transit. Currently proposed hub locations are in Washington, Oregon, and Montana.
Matt Crane, chief executive of AECOM’s U.S. West region, said :
We are honored to collaborate with the DOE and help realize the hydrogen infrastructure critical for a sustainable, decarbonized economy,
“Our extensive experience in environmental impact assessments and leadership in the hydrogen market uniquely position us to drive the success of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub.”
The hub includes an array of projects to create networks of hydrogen producers, consumers, and local connective infrastructure that establish the Pacific Northwest as a leader in global energy innovation. The hub will use the region’s renewable resources to produce clean hydrogen, which will help lower costs and make hydrogen more affordable. The DOE aims for the project to cut around 1.7 million metric tons of CO2 emissions each year, equivalent to removing 400,000 gasoline-powered cars from the road.
