Deutsche Bahn wants to research hydrogen engines in Bremen

By autumn, a test center with the Fraunhofer Institute is to be built at the maintenance facility in Hemelingen. The Senate and the railway have signed an agreement to this end.

For years, people have been looking for a future for the railway’s maintenance facility in Bremen-Hemelingen. Hundreds of jobs were at risk there on several occasions. Now, in a joint statement by the railway and the Bremen Senate, it is said that the facility should become a beacon for environmentally friendly engine conversion and also create new jobs in the long term. The aim is to convert the engines of old diesel locomotives to run on hydrogen so that they can be used for longer, says DB board member Daniela Gerd tom Markotten,

This is a truly unique selling point for the Bremen plant; such a test center for converting to hydrogen only exists here.

There have been several similar declarations of intent in recent years, but now concrete steps are to follow, stressed Bremen’s mayor Andreas Bovenschulte (SPD). The state of Bremen is supporting the research center with several hundred thousand euros. It is still unclear when the first diesel engines will be converted.
