Five EU, North African countries to further work on hydrogen corridor
Italy, Germany, Austria, Algeria and Tunisia on Tuesday signed a joint declaration of intent to continue work on the development of the SouthH2 Corridor project, which will carry renewable hydrogen over 3,300 kilometres (2,051 miles) from North Africa to the three European countries. The declaration was signed during the first Penta Ministerial Meeting in Rome, the Italian government said. The ministerial meeting was followed by a business forum, which brought together companies from the five countries that are present or interested in the hydrogen supply chain. SouthH2 is recognised as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the EU."Italy is working towards the goals of decarbonisation and energy independence in a concrete and pragmatic way, pursuing an energy mix in which renewable sources, hydrogen, and nuclear energy are adequately developed,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani. According to him, the Southern Hydrogen Corridor will strengthen Italy’s role as a European energy hub.“This agreement has great political and institutional value, because it reaffirms the commitment to cooperation, aimed at carrying out a decisive project for the energy future of both continents,” added Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto.
