Honda has announced its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell module, claiming it halves the production cost of the current version available in the CR-V e:FCEV, has double the durability, and generates 150 kW of electric power. Honda says the module was shrunk by increasing the volumetric power density by more than three times, which increases the flexibility of installation layouts. The module, scheduled to go into production, measures just 28.7 inches wide, 27.5 inches high, and 22.8 inches deep. It weighs just 550 pounds, but although even Ferrari has plans for hydrogen tech, one can’t help but be apprehensive about whether it will ever take off on a global scale.

The current fuel cell Honda uses is part of a joint development program with General Motors. The new one is wholly developed by Honda. However, GM hasn’t put it in a car, and it’s only available in the new CR-V e:FCEV. It’s all, still, highly experimental as well as developmental. Honda only planned to make 300 CR-V e:FCEV models, and they’re only available in California as that’s the only state in the US that has hydrogen pumps for the public.

Unfortunately, hydrogen as a passenger vehicle fuel has taken a hit recently with some pumps being shut down. Taking that into account and our current government administration’s view against oil alternatives, whether Honda will put the new fuel cell in a car in the US is hard to predict. Honda has already indicated that automotive isn’t the only area it wants to use fuel cell technology, and a smaller unit would be ideal for its boats, and likely its second generation of the Honda Fuel Cell Generator.

Honda has also announced that the Honda Fuel Cell Generator is scheduled for mass production in 2026. It’s designed to be used as a backup power supply to large facilities such as factories and offices. When we drove the CR-V e:FCEV, Honda was keen to show off one of the units that are currently employed as a backup at its campus in Torrance, California. The Honda Fuel Cell Generator is surprisingly compact, using the current generation of fuel cells, and designed to start supplying power within 10 seconds of startup.
