NextChem awarded licensing and process design for Indonesian SAF plant
Italy-headed industrial group MARIE S.p.A (MARIE Group) has announced that its Group subsidiary NextChem has been awarded the licensing and the process design package for a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant project located in Sei Mangkei, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia.

According to a statement, this will be the first plant that will produce SAF with high efficiency, mainly from palm oil mill effluent (POME) enabling the full valorization of this feedstock in Indonesia, including certified used cooking oil (UCO) while demonstrating the economic sustainability of small-scale plants.
This award the value of which has not been disclosed follows the successful completion of the feasibility study announced in August 2024 for the joint development of an SAF plant optimized for local feedstock availability.
Adapted local scale SAF plant
The 60,000 tonnes per year SAF production capacity could potentially account for approximately 5 percent of the fuel demand of the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) in Jakarta, the largest airport in Indonesia, confirming the fit of the domestic scale concept.
The positive outcome demonstrated the viability of an SAF production facility designed for domestic, locally sourced feedstock and located to fit feedstock logistics in Indonesia.
NextChem offers a fully integrated package that combines both its NX PTU, a proprietary pretreatment process for second-generation oleaginous feedstocks, the hydrogen production unit, and its proprietary NX SAF Bio hydrotreated esters and fatty acids (HEFA) process, for efficient SAF production.
This process uses second-generation vegetable oils and residual fats pre-treated through the NX PTU technology.
The purified feedstock is then refined into SAF using hydrogen through the NX SAF BIO technology.
This allows the production of an ultra-low-carbon SAF that the company says can reduce aviation emissions by up to 95 percent compared with fossil jet fuel.
The high level of standardization, coupled with the technology’s modular and compact design, allows for reduced project execution and makes it ideal for small-scale plants in any geography.
Decarbonizing high-impact sectors such as aviation requires not only technical expertise but also the courage to execute new avenues. This agreement demonstrates that MAIRE has the competencies and determination to deploy innovative and integrated technological solutions that can be adapted to different contexts and needs, commented Alessandro Bernini, CEO of MAIRE.
