Shanghai | January 7, 2025 | On January 6, Schaeffler signed a cooperation framework agreement with the People’s Government of Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai, to establish a wholly-owned subsidiary, Schaeffler Hydrogen Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., and settled in Jiading District, Shanghai. The new company focuses on the research and development and production of hydrogen energy-related technologies and products, and provides hydrogen energy solutions for end users in different application scenarios.

As a secondary energy with abundant sources and green zero carbon, hydrogen energy has great potential in addressing climate change and is gradually becoming one of the important carriers of global energy transformation. Against the backdrop of China’s “dual carbon” strategy, Schaeffler established a hydrogen energy technology company to promote the application and industrialization of hydrogen energy technology by leveraging its own technological advantages. The new company is located in Jiading Hydrogen Energy Port in Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. It mainly focuses on the research and development, production and industrialization of hydrogen energy-related technologies and products such as PEM/AEM (proton exchange membrane/anion exchange membrane) water electrolysis hydrogen production stacks.

Hydrogen energy is one of Schaeffler’s strategic business areas. Schaeffler has core technologies in metal forming, material technology, surface treatment, etc., and can play a key role in developing hydrogen-related products and achieving large-scale mass production. In the field of hydrogen energy, Schaeffler focuses on the entire industry chain, including from hydrogen production to the use of hydrogen in fuel cells and even green steel manufacturing. Metal bipolar plates are one of Schaeffler’s core products in this field. The product is processed through precision molding processes and special coatings and is a key component of water electrolyzers and hydrogen fuel cells. In addition, Schaeffler can also provide special bearings, thermal management modules, electronic control systems, sensors, and hydrogen circulation system components to help build efficient hydrogen fuel cell power systems.

After Schaeffler Hydrogen Technology Co., Ltd. settles in Jiading, it will be deeply integrated into the regional supply chain system to jointly promote the innovative development of the hydrogen energy industry. Schaeffler has made positive progress in the industrial application of hydrogen production. Not long ago, the first Shanghai source-grid-load-storage integrated zero-carbon hydrogen storage project in which Schaeffler participated was launched at the Shanghai Hydrogen Energy Storage Power Base located in Jiading Hydrogen Energy Port. In this demonstration project, Schaeffler provided a full set of PEM water electrolysis hydrogen production solutions, including pure water production, power supply, and gas-water separation one-stop hydrogen production services. This is also the first commercial-level PEM hydrogen production system delivered by Schaeffler, which is an important step for Schaeffler in the field of hydrogen energy.
