Vale, GreenIron plan metals supply chain decarbonisation

Brazilian metals and mining company Vale SA (BVMF:VALE3) will be working with Swedish firm GreenIron H2 AB in an attempt to decarbonise the mining and metals supply chain.The two companies have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) outlining their plans, Vale announced.The pair will undertake a feasibility study for an innovative direct reduction facility in Brazil to be operated by GreenIron. At the same time, Vale will supply its iron ore to GreenIron’s commercial operations in Sandviken, Sweden.The two partners will search for a suitable site for the project in Brazil and will assess renewable energy and resource supply options. They will also consider the feasibility of using green hydrogen and other innovations to lower the environmental impact of future operations.GreenIron has developed an energy-efficient technology for reducing metal oxides to pure metals. The firm is currently commissioning its site in Sandviken and expects to scale up its activities later this year.“This agreement brings together Vale’s superior product portfolio, Brazil’s competitive advantage on green hydrogen and GreenIron’s expertise on sustainable iron production to provide low-carbon solutions for the mining and metals industry," commented Rogerio Nogueira, EVP of Commercial and New Business at Vale.
