Alkmaar energy project wins international hydrogen award

Rotterdam – Today, the ‘REFORMERS/Renewable Energy Valley Alkmaar’ energy project received the award for best Clean Hydrogen Project at the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam. The Alkmaar project is developing the first so-called ‘Renewable Energy Valley’ and will serve as a model for future valley regions across Europe. The development of the entire hydrogen chain including the application of innovative technologies in the project and enabling full continuous production -independent of solar and wind- led to the international recognition.

REFORMERS is a comprehensive, long-term international innovation programme in which renewable energy is produced and consumed locally by and for business parks and adjacent communities. Project partners from across Europe are working together to realise Europe’s first Renewable Energy Valley Alkmaar.

Project manager Joep Sanderink of New Energy Coalition accepted the award on Tuesday evening during the Award Ceremony.

Renewable Energy Valley (REV) Alkmaar is a demarcated area in Alkmaar and Heiloo and consists of the Boekelermeer business park, bordered by densely populated residential areas, a light industrial zone and agricultural land. The REV integrates sustainable energy carriers such as electricity, heat, green gas and hydrogen. A complete hydrogen value chain is being developed – from production and storage to distribution and end-use.

Since 2023 businesses, governments, knowledge institutions and residents in the area have been working on a self-sufficient energy infrastructure in which renewable energy is generated, stored and exchanged.  The application of sustainable hydrogen plays a central role. By the end of the project period, the area will be self-sufficient in meeting its own energy needs through renewable sources.

Project manager Joep Sanderink:

It is impressive to watch international innovation coming together in this project. At the InVesta Alkmaar expertise centre, project partners HYNOCA/Haffner Energy (F)and STOFF2 (G)will produce renewable hydrogen from organic residues and green electricity on a continuous basis as part of this pilot.

In this way, we can store and supply hydrogen reliably, sustainably and locally.’

Sanderink, said:

The project will furthermore give a major boost to the area’s economy,
