Gasum acquires full ownership of Swedish biogas- and upgrading plant
In Sweden, Nordic energy company Gasum Oy has announced that it has signed and closed a share purchase agreement for 100 percent of the shares in NSR Biogas AB and the remaining 1/3 of the shares in Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis AB, both of which are located in Helsingborg.

A subsidiary of regional municipal waste management company Nordvästra Skånes Rehållnings AB (NSR), NSR Biogas owns and operates a biogas production plant in the city of Helsingborg.
At an adjacent site, Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis upgrades the produced biogas into biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG), and Gasum sells it into the market.
Gasum has already been the majority owner of Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis since 2023 and is now acquiring full ownership by acquiring NSR’s stake in the company.
The biogas plant uses approximately 160,000 tonnes of household and industrial organic waste as well as livestock manure.
The maximum production capacity is 80 GWh of RNG per annum.
A well-matched transaction
According to NSR, the divestment of NSR Biogas and NSR’s remaining stake in Liquidgas Biofuels Genesis to Gasum is the result of a review of the future conditions of NSR’s biogas business.
The conclusion is that biogas production is not part of the company’s core mission, and NSR is unable to prioritize long-term investments required by the plant or to be active in private sector gas markets.
Selling to Gasum is the most business-like and sustainable decision. We secure continued local treatment of our food waste, reduce the number of stakeholders in the value chain, and free up resources for our core business. It is also positive for the staff, who now have a new owner with competence, capacity, and a long-term perspective, said Thomas Falkstrand, CEO of NSR.
Gasum, on the other hand, is investing heavily in increasing biogas production, especially in Sweden. The company is constructing new large-scale biogas plants in the country, the first of which started production in early 2025.
The second is under construction and is expected to start operations in 2026.
Since Gasum is already the majority owner of the biogas upgrading operation, it makes sense for us to take ownership of the full production chain at the Helsingborg plant. Acquiring the operation strengthens our foothold in the Skåne region, where competition for biogas feedstock is tough. There is also an opportunity to optimize operations at the plant to fully utilize its production capacity, commented Mika Wiljanen, CEO of Gasum.
Gasum’s strategic goal is to provide its customers with 7 TWh of renewable gas, including biomethane, bioLNG, and e-methane, per annum by 2027. Achieving the ambitious goal would mean a total carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction of 1.8 million tonnes per year for Gasum’s customers.
The value of the transactions has not been disclosed.
