Axpo, partners break ground on 2-MW green H2 plant in Switzerland
Swiss energy trader and renewables company Axpo Holding AG has begun construction of its second green hydrogen production plant in Switzerland, the company said on Friday.Axpo and its partners held a ground-breaking ceremony for the 2-MW project in Buerglen, central Switzerland. The facility will be operated by H2Uri, a company jointly owned by Axpo and partners -- energy firms Schaetzle AG and EWA-Energie Uri, and tourism and shipping company SGV Holding AG.Operations at the site are expected to begin in 2026. The plant will take green electricity from the adjacent EWA-Energie Uri hydropower plant to produce up to 260 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, Axpo said.The hydrogen will be used to power the passenger vessel Saphir on Lake Lucerne, as well as other applications, including supplying a hydrogen refuelling station operated by Schaetzle.Axpo also said its planned green hydrogen production plant at Wildegg-Brugg is on track, with construction scheduled to begin in spring 2025, after an initial delay in obtaining a building permit.Axpo, alongside utility Rhiienergie AG, inaugurated its first green hydrogen plant, a 2.5-MW facility, in Switzerland’s Graubunden Canton earlier this year.
