Vireon attracts more funds to advance Finnish green hydrogen project
Business Finland has awarded a EUR-3.8-million (USD 3.98m) grant to Norwegian Hydrogen AS’ refuelling subsidiary Vireon AS to support the construction of a 5-MW electrolyser in Jyvaskyla in central Finland as part of a project for green hydrogen refuelling and production.Vireon noted in a statement published today that it is already in the process of establishing the Jyvaskyla Hydrogen Hub, which will be implemented in two phases. The initial phase involves building a hydrogen refuelling station for heavy-duty transport, partly funded by an earlier EU grant to the company. Confirmed users include five hydrogen-powered buses set to enter regular bus traffic in Jyvaskyla. The station is scheduled to be operational by 2025.The second phase, backed by the new Business Finland grant, will add local hydrogen production with an on-site electrolyser at the refuelling station. Groundwork is starting immediately to accelerate implementation, Vireon said.Upon completion, the production site will have an annual output of around 700 tonnes of green hydrogen. It will be sold to various heavy transport operators through Vireon’s Finnish refuelling network.Vireon further noted in the statement that it is set to become Finland’s first approved renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) fuel distributor, as confirmed by the local energy authority, starting as of January 1, 2025.(EUR 1 = USD 1.049)
