The Ministry, with support from the IDB, developed the Roadmap and National Strategy for the Production and Use of Green and Low-Emission Hydrogen in Bolivia. These strategic documents, presented at the end of 2024, outline the path for the development of green hydrogen in the country.
The Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy announced the implementation of the first green hydrogen production projects in the departments of Oruro, Tarija, and Santa Cruz, as part of the national government’s efforts to consolidate a fair, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition in Bolivia.
The Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Alejandro Gallardo, during his participation in the Webinar on Green Hydrogen (MHE) and UNEP – International Perspectives and Opportunities for Bolivia, where he emphasized that the country is taking on the global challenge of the energy transition with concrete actions aimed at diversifying the energy matrix, import substitution, and industrialization.
In fulfillment of this commitment, the Ministry, with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), developed the Roadmap and National Strategy for the Production and Use of Green and Low-Emission Hydrogen in Bolivia. These strategic documents were presented at the end of 2024 and outline the path for the development of green hydrogen in the country, identifying opportunities, challenges, and challenges in the national and international context.
Gallardo, emphasized:
We understand green hydrogen not only as a clean source of energy, but also as a concrete opportunity for industrial development, technological innovation, job creation, and national development,
For his part, the Vice Minister of Alternative Energy, Álvaro Arnez, noted that, during this administration, Bolivia joined the Clean Hydrogen Certification System for Latin America and the Caribbean (Certhilac), an initiative that promotes regional standards and strengthens the low-carbon hydrogen market.
Within this framework, the authority stated that the Government is seeking non-reimbursable resources with international cooperation to finance the pilot projects. One of them is being developed through the Accelerate to Demonstrate (A2D) initiative, implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Within this framework, Bolivia will present its first pilot project on June 13, located in the department of Oruro.
Additionally, the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy is working to strengthen national capacities through training, capacity building, and knowledge generation programs, with the goal of preparing the country for the development and use of green hydrogen as a new energy source.
