Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly convened a high-level meeting to review a proposed project for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia in the Gulf of Suez.

The project aligns with Egypt’s broader energy strategy, which emphasizes the use of new and renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the country’s capabilities in this sector.

During the meeting, Madbouly underscored the importance of green fuel production projects, highlighting their role in transforming Egypt into a hub for green hydrogen. He noted the state’s incentives and the country’s significant renewable energy resources, which are crucial for achieving carbon neutrality and attracting investments.

The project, known as the “Green Fuel Alliance,” is a collaborative effort between the Ministries of Transport and Electricity. Discussions focused on the project’s general plan and optimal production capacity. The initiative aims to produce green ammonia at a competitive cost for use as an alternative fuel, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Key objectives of the project include providing green fuel for ships passing through the Suez Canal and exporting it to global markets. This would position Egypt as a regional energy trading center, leveraging its strategic location amidst intense competition in the energy sector.

The meeting was attended by several prominent officials, including Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Kamel Al-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport; Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy; Hassan El-Khatib, Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade; Ibrahim Mekki, Chairman of the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (ECHEM); and Ahmed Mahmoud El-Sayed, Chairman of Misr Fertilizers Production Company (MOPCO).
