Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool verified by DNV
Finland-headed energy company Gasum Oy has signed an agreement with Norway-headed global classification company Det Norske Veritas Group (DNV), whereby DNV will verify the accuracy of Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pooling service.

DNV is the world’s leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry. Gasum and DNV have a long-standing relationship as Gasum has for years been using DNV’s Fuel Boss system for managing its liquefied gas deliveries.
Gasum’s pooling service will use DNV’s Emissions Connect solution to gather and validate consumption and emissions data in real time from all vessels in the pool.
This requires the installation of a very simple and cost-effective plug-and-play device on board each vessel.
Additionally, DNV will, at the end of the year, verify the balance of the pool for EU reporting purposes.
This is a new requirement that has risen as a result of the FuelEU Maritime regulation, and DNV is up to the task due to its long experience in similar verification processes.
In managing a pooling service like this, data is critical. Everything comes down to the validity of the data we collect as it enables us to keep the pool tightly in balance at all times. DNV’s Emissions Connect is the most reliable and easy-to-use tool on the market for gathering data. DNV is a fantastic collaborator for us for this brand new service because the company is trusted by all players in the industry and we have a long history together, said Jani Arala, Solution Lead at Gasum.
Nonetheless, DNV’s role extends only to the pool itself, and all pool members can continue using their preferred verifier for their vessels.
DNV is proud to support Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime pool with our Emissions Connect solution, enabling effective pool compliance management throughout the year. With increasing regulatory pressure, shipowners need reliable data and transparent processes to navigate FuelEU Maritime requirements efficiently. We look forward to supporting this initiative and continuing to provide trusted solutions for a more sustainable maritime industry, said Helge Hermundsgård, Head of Sales Emissions Connect at DNV.
Compliance as a service
The FuelEU Maritime regulation aims to increase the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels and limit greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the European Union.
Starting in 2025 vessel owners need to reduce the carbon intensity (CI) of purchased fuel initially by two percent with the required reduction growing incrementally to as much as 80 percent by 2050.
To make compliance easier for shipping companies, FuelEU Maritime permits the voluntary pooling of emission reductions between vessels.
This means, that vessels that are over-compliant can compensate for emissions on behalf of under-compliant vessels, in other words, provide compliance as a service.
According to Gasum, its pooling service is the easiest and most reliable way for shipping companies to save on compliance costs by avoiding penalties.
Gasum manages the pool, supplies the ultra-low emission bioLNG to the compliance generators, and offers over-compliance to shipping companies with conventional fuel vessels.
Liquefied biomethane, bioLNG, is a fully renewable and environmentally friendly fuel with life-cycle GHG emissions that are, the company says on average, 90 percent lower when compared with fossil fuel use. When produced using livestock manure, the emissions can even be negative.
Biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG), can be used in all the same applications as conventional fossil natural gas.
Gasum’s strategic goal is to offer 7 TWh of renewable gas, including biomethane and e-methane, yearly to its customers by 2027.
