US aircraft maker Boeing (NYSE:BA) is investing in Oslo-headquartered sustainable fuels maker Norsk e-Fuel AS under a strategic partnership agreement to support the development of its debut site touted as one of Europe’s first industrial-scale Power-to-Liquids facilities.

Boeing’s investment will accelerate the production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the Nordics and globally, a joint press statement says.

The US firm is joining other existing offtake partners including Norwegian and Cargolux.

“Our support of and collaboration with Norsk e-Fuel underscores the importance of using fossil-free energy to accelerate SAF production, which is key to reducing aviation’s carbon emissions towards 2050,” said Steve Gillard, Boeing’s regional sustainability director for Europe, Middle East, Turkiye, Africa and Central Asia.

Founded in 2019, Norsk e-Fuel specialises in electro-SAF, using fossil-free power to generate green hydrogen and combine it with recycled CO2 from biogenic sources.

The company’s first e-Fuel plant project is being developed in the Norwegian town of Mosjoenin, Vefsn Municipality, and is expected to produce 50 million litres of e-crude of which up to 80% will be upgraded to SAF. Last year, it also secured a greenfield site for another project in Finland.

The company’s founding partners include Sunfire, Climeworks, Paul Wurth from SMS group and Valinor. Over the years, the shareholder base was expanded with the addition of Lux-Airport and local airline Norwegian.

“Boeing’s investment will further accelerate our project pipeline and will facilitate the broader aviation industry’s transition to net-zero emissions,” Norsk e-Fuel’s CCO Lars Bjørn Larsen said.
