Plans for Ukraine’s First Hydrogen Plant in Volyn Backs EU Push for Green Hydrogen

Wien Energie and UDP Renewables are teaming up to bring Ukraine’s first hydrogen production facility to life in the Volyn region. Dubbed GREENWEST PtX, the project will tap into local renewable energy sources to generate green hydrogen — aiming not just to power Ukraine’s clean energy goals, but to serve as an export hub to the European Union. With the EU looking to wean itself off of Russian gas since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, this couldn’t come at a better time. Wien Energie is already on board as a buyer, planning to source hydrogen as part of its strategy to ditch Russian energy by 2025.
Volyn on track to become a clean energy hotspot
The Volyn region isn’t starting from scratch — it’s already making strides in wind power, and the new hydrogen project is only going to accelerate its transformation into a renewable energy hub. While details like production capacity and job creation are still under wraps, there’s optimism that this move will give the local economy a lift and help support the EU’s ambitious 2050 climate goals.
Hydrogen infrastructure gains traction across Europe
The GREENWEST PtX project is part of a much bigger wave sweeping across Europe. Projects like OMV’s 140 MW hydrogen plant in Austria are just more signs that hydrogen infrastructure is gathering serious momentum. From slashing emissions in heavy industries to boosting sustainable energy supply chains, green hydrogen is quickly shifting from “promising tech” to a key player in industrial decarbonization.
