Spain – The Government selects Repsol, EDP, Moeve, BP and Iberdrola for the hydrogen valleys – The IDAE accepts a total of 16 projects among which it plans to distribute 1.2 billion EUR

  • The IDAE accepts a total of 16 projects among which it plans to distribute 1.2 billion
  • The Executive thus accepts all the projects submitted to Perte

The Ministry for Ecological Transition has released the list of projects accepted for the creation of large valleys or renewable hydrogen clusters. The 16 accepted projects will share 1.2 billion euros of the NextGenEU funds , which are expected to be awarded next March, to promote the development of this energy vector. This means that all the officially submitted projects have been accepted, since only Hyberus is not included in the call for proposals, but by its own decision.

According to the IDAE resolution, Repsol has managed to have its Tarragona Hydrogen Network (T-Hynet) project and the Cartagena Phase II electrolyser classified, which will increase the company’s investment in hydrogen to nearly 1.5 billion euros.

Moeve has obtained the acceptance of the Andalusian Valley for green hydrogen with the Onuba Project, which plans to mobilise a total of up to 3,000 million in the coming years. BP incorporates its gH2 plan in Castellón in its phase II, with the prospect of becoming one of the largest hydrogen developments in Spain.

EDP has managed to qualify its Challenge 2.0 (H2 Los Barrios) and GH2 Soto 250 (Asturias) proposals. Iberdrola has been admitted with the Huelva renewable hydrogen cluster and Hyren Almonte with its ROCIOH2 project.

CIP and Enagas will be able to incorporate the Catalina project (Aragon). Forestal del Atlántico enters with ValdoEume and Armonía Green Galicia and IGNIS with the Hydrogen Valley of A Coruña. Heidelberg Materials Hispania Cementos will introduce its large-scale production plan in Bilbao. Reolum enters with the Green Hydrogen Valley of Leon (Mahogany Renewable Development) and Solarig with Turboleta SAF (Aragon). Walia Energy and Capital Energy enter the generation of green H2 for the production of derived fuels in the Ebro river valley (HyBERUS) and, finally, Ric Energy enters with its sustainable aviation fuel production plant “Compostilla Green”.

The aim of this line of incentives is to encourage the large-scale production and consumption of renewable and electrolytic hydrogen, and its derived fuels, to promote the full integration of this vector into the Spanish energy mix. In this way, progress can be made in the decarbonisation of different industrial sectors of the economy, contributing to the competitiveness of our industry.

Renewable hydrogen clusters or valleys are essential to achieving the objectives by bringing together, in a single location, multiple stages of the hydrogen value chain, from production, storage and distribution to various users, such as the heavy transport sector and industry, all of which are difficult to decarbonise. The hydrogen valley association was created yesterday.
