Adsorbi launches pilot plant

Swedish startup manufacturer of bio-based adsorbents for air purification Adsorbi AB has announced the launch of its first pilot plant — a critical milestone that prepares the company for commercial scaling and strategic partnerships. The plant has a nominal production capacity of 140 tonnes per year of Adsorbi’s proprietary air purification material, made from Nordic cellulose and already sold in six countries for a variety of applications.

Adsorbi launches pilot plant

Located in Gothenburg, Sweden, the new facility is designed to demonstrate the performance and scalability of Adsorbi’s proprietary materials in industrial settings.

The pilot plant will serve as the company’s primary platform for validating product-market fit, gathering key operational data, and answering the growing needs of Adsorbi’s current clients.

This pilot plant is a major inflection point. It de-risks our technology for commercial-scale and opens the door to revenue-generating deployments. With growing regulatory pressure for air purification companies and growing market demand for bio-based gas filter media, our platform is well-positioned for rapid adoption, said Hanna Munge, CEO and Co-founder of Adsorbi.

Cleaning up ambient air

In October 2024, the European Union (EU) adopted the updated Ambient Air Quality Directive (AAQD), aimed at safeguarding public health.

The directive sets stricter limits for major pollutants such as particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide—substances closely linked to respiratory problems.

Adsorbi targets the multi-billion-dollar market of gaseous pollution removal with its innovative adsorbents produced from wood-based cellulose fibers.

It is great to follow Adsorbi’s determined progress on the path to full commercialisation. The milestone now reached opens doors for both further development of the Adsorbi technology and deeper customer interaction. I am really looking forward to the results of the phase that has now begun, said Niklas von Weymarn, CEO of Metsä Spring, the investment arm of Finland-headed forest industry major Metsä Group, and Adsorbi board member since 2023.

Heightened global focus on human health

While not lethal, Adsorbi’s proprietary material is used to address malodour from footwear (photo courtesy ICEBUG).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), indoor air pollution claimed over 3 million lives in 2020.

Many ailments, such as asthma, heart disease, and lung cancer, can be caused by bad air quality.

The combined effects of ambient air pollution and household air pollution are associated with 6.7 million premature deaths annually.

Adsorbi’s pilot launch coincides with heightened global focus on human health, net-zero targets, and industrial decarbonisation with strict ESG requirements.

According to Adsorbi, its technology offers a more sustainable, cost-effective alternative to fossil-based filter solutions — without high costs or energy consumption.

Our value proposition is strong. We deliver cleaner air, lower operating costs, and faster compliance for our customers—and a high-impact, high-growth opportunity for our investors, ended Hanna Munge.
