Cefmof will install a hydrogen production unit adjacent to Jyväskylä’s hydrogen refueling station by the end of 2025. For this project, the foundation has ordered a 1-megawatt containerised alkaline-water electrolyser (AEL) from Asahi Kasei, a global technology company advancing sustainable hydrogen solutions.

The alkaline water electrolyser will be installed next to the station and will produce hydrogen locally. The containerised, modular structure enables flexible expansion of production capacity in line with future growth in hydrogen demand. The unit will be capable of producing, per hour, an amount of hydrogen equivalent to the full tanks of approximately three fuel cell passenger vehicles (FCVs). Installation is scheduled to begin in Jyväskylä at the end of 2025, with production expected to start during the first half of 2026.

Kenji Takeda, Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei responsible for Business Development for the Green Solution Project, commented:

With this project, our hydrogen-related business has moved fully into the commercialization phase.

“We will work with our partners to demonstrate the reliability of our alkaline water electrolysis system through installation in extreme cold-climate environments and contribute to the decarbonization of the Central Finland region. We are proud to be a one-stop supplier providing support from installation to hydrogen production operations”.

This marks a significant milestone, as only a few hydrogen production facilities are currently operational in Finland. Cefmof is among the first organisations in Finland to adopt a containerised alkaline-water electrolyser system for hydrogen production at this scale. The acquisition supports the foundation’s long-term commitment to building a hydrogen economy in Central Finland.

Haruka Arai, Executive Director of Cefmof, says:

The acquisition of a hydrogen production unit in Jyväskylä is a key part of the green hydrogen ecosystem taking shape in the region and reflects Cefmof’s long-term commitment to advancing a carbon-neutral future in Central Finland,

The new production unit supports a local production – local consumption model, where hydrogen is produced and utilised within the same region. The hydrogen produced will also be used as fuel for hydrogen-powered buses operating in Jyväskylä.
