Chinese PV Industry Brief: Government targets energy use at polysilicon plants

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has launched a 2025 inspection program targeting energy consumption at 41 major polysilicon producers to curb output.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on August 1 announced a 2025 inspection program targeting the energy consumption of 41 major polysilicon producers. The checks, due to be completed and reported to MIIT by September 30, are widely viewed as a regulatory effort to control output by tightening energy-use standards, a move expected to significantly affect production capacity and supply.

China Southern Glass (CSG) said its estimated CNY 6.5 billion (USD 894 million) photovoltaic glass supply contract with solar giant Longi had lapsed without full execution. The five-year agreement, signed in July 2020, had a term ending July 31, 2025. CSG cited rising product prices, market volatility and changes in Longi’s procurement strategy as reasons for the shortfall. Actual sales under the contract amounted to CNY 1.441 billion ($198 million).

Jinko ESS and battery maker EVE Energy jointly announced on August 4 that their joint factory dedicated to energy-storage cells has entered mass production. The facility, which completed equipment commissioning in May and began full-scale operations in June, will supply Jinko ESS with 5 GWh of 314 Ah cells annually. EVE will station specialists at the plant to accelerate its progress towards “excellence factory” standards, aiming to meet Jinko’s rapidly expanding global storage business demand.

Polysilicon prices remained firm, according to the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association’s Silicon Branch report on August 6. N-type reprocessed material averaged CNY 47,200 ($6,492) per ton, up 0.21% week-on-week, while granular silicon held steady at CNY 44,300 ($6,094) per ton. Nine companies were in production, with one resuming output and another entering maintenance. August output is projected at around 125,000 tonnes, exceeding wafer-sector demand—estimated at 108,000 tonnes—by about 16,000 tonnes.

Xinyi Solar said it expects revenue of CNY 10.93 billion based on unaudited and consolidated interim figures for the six months ended 30 June 2025. It was down slightly by 6.5% compared to the same period last year. A profit of CNY 745.8 million was indicated, down 58.8% compared to the same period last year.
