Doosan Enerbility and Korea Western Power (KOWEPO) are joining forces to take South Korea’s clean energy game to the next level. The two companies signed an MOU on May 22, 2025, to co-develop and test a 90MW hydrogen-fueled turbine—designed to run entirely on hydrogen with practically no carbon emissions. Doosan is taking the lead on tech development, while KOWEPO will handle the construction and operation of a full-scale demo plant right in South Korea.
Pushing Ahead with South Korea’s Hydrogen Strategy
This partnership isn’t happening in a vacuum. It’s perfectly in step with the South Korean government’s clean hydrogen strategy, which aims to cut carbon emissions, boost energy independence, and set Korea up as a front-runner in global hydrogen production and zero-emission technology. What’s more, the plan is to bring in local SMEs to support the supply chain—so it’s not just about innovation, it’s about building a future-ready ecosystem from the ground up and eventually exporting the tech abroad.
Big Plans in Changwon for a Greener Future
The project is set to take shape in Changwon, a key location for moving South Korea’s hydrogen infrastructure forward. It’s expected to open up new opportunities in advanced manufacturing and drive progress in industrial decarbonization. The upcoming 90MW turbine is just the start—there’s also a larger 400MW model currently in the works, with both versions eyeing commercial release by 2028.
Bottom line? Korea’s betting big on hydrogen as the cornerstone of its sustainable energy future—and with this kind of collaboration, it’s making all the right moves.
