Driventic’s EAC compressor delivers up to 15 bar for electric trucks and buses
Driventic has introduced the Electric Air Compressor (EAC), a compressed-air system designed for electric trucks and buses. The company says the two-stage unit operates at pressures of up to 15 bar.
The EAC is built around a two-stage reciprocating compressor with its own oil system and water or refrigerant cooling. The company packages the electric motor, silencers, oil circuit, heat exchangers and sensors into an enclosure, and uses mass balancing and insulation, which Driventic says holds down vibration and noise.
Compared with conventional solutions, Driventic says the two-stage compression cuts energy use by up to 35%. The energy saving is “a crucial advantage in energy- and cost-conscious fleet management, especially for electrified commercial vehicles like trucks and buses,” said Jörg Auerswald, Vice President Engine Components at Driventic. The company puts maintenance intervals at up to four years or 24,000 operating hours for trucks, and up to four years or 12,000 operating hours for buses, depending on the vehicle’s operating profile. Driventic says the compressor is designed for continuous duty and that its modular construction lowers running costs.
Compressed air runs the pneumatic brakes, suspension and door systems on heavy commercial vehicles. On a diesel truck the compressor is driven off the engine, but a battery-electric truck needs an electrically driven unit, and every watt it consumes draws down the battery and cuts range.
Driventic says the EAC is moving through prototype construction and validation toward a planned start of production at the end of 2027. “The first pilot customers have already registered their interest in partnering with us for the field trials,” said Auerswald.
