European Energy’s Kassø PtX facility produces first industry-grade e-methanol
Denmark-headquartered renewable power major and Power-to-X (PtX) project developer, European Energy A/S has announced that it has produced the first batch of industry-grade electro-methanol (e-methanol) at its Power-to-X facility in Kassø, Denmark. The e-methanol is compliant with the methanol industry's IMPCA standard specifications.

This follows the earlier production of raw e-methanol last month and marks the next stage in commissioning the facility, which, when fully ramped up, will be the world’s largest commercial e-methanol facility of its kind.
Biogenic carbon dioxide from biogas production
The Kassø PtX facility, designed, constructed, and commissioned by European Energy’s Power-to-X department, uses renewable electricity and biogenic carbon dioxide (bioCO2) to produce carbon-neutral e-methanol, supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping and chemical manufacturing.
The latest batch achieved a tested purity level above the industry standard of 99.85 percent, suitable for industrial use.
The bioCO2 used in the process is a by-product of biogas production derived from agricultural residues.
The first delivery of bioCO2 from Tønder Biogas to the Kassø PtX facility occurred in mid-March and forms part of the closed carbon cycle supporting the e-methanol production.
Grand opening to mark commercial operations
In parallel with the commission, European Energy and co-owner Mitsui & Co. are preparing for the official inauguration of the Kassø e-methanol facility in May 2025 to mark the formal launch of commercial operations and bring together stakeholders from the energy, transport, and industrial sectors.
The production of industry-grade e-methanol at the intended quality level confirms that the technology is functioning as designed. This represents a key step in demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale Power-to-X production to displace fossil fuels in hard-to-abate sectors, said René Alcaraz Frederiksen, CEO of Solar Park Kassø, the joint-venture company between European Energy and Mitsui & Co., which owns the Power-to-X facility.
The Kassø PtX facility is powered by the adjacent Kassø solar park – the largest solar park in the Nordics with a capacity of 300 MW.
