H2@Work Employee Spotlight: Dan Scott

Dan is a Senior Process Engineer at Plug in Rochester, NY. He implements, maintains, and improves manufacturing processes for fuel cell stacks. His work focuses on gasket dispensing for graphite plates, metal plates, and assembly trays. Recently, he has taken on the entire assembly value stream, overseeing both gasket work and full stack builds.

Hooked by Rochester’s Innovation

Dan first heard about Plug from a coworker who praised the new facility. He toured the Rochester site while it was still under construction. Seeing the cutting-edge technology and infrastructure in person convinced him to join. He was eager to apply his skills right away in a fast-growing environment.

Embracing Challenges and Growth

The most unusual experience in Dan’s career was the onset of Covid. Overnight, the manufacturing world faced severe part shortages and sourcing hurdles. Dan tapped into creativity to keep production moving and meet customer needs. That period taught him the value of innovation under pressure.

Overcoming Demand Fluctuations

At Plug, rapid changes in product demand keep Dan on his toes. He must constantly shift priorities and adapt workflows. This flexibility ensures the team meets changing goals without sacrificing quality. Dan thrives on finding ways to stay agile in a dynamic market.

Passion for Hydrogen’s Potential

Dan believes hydrogen can decarbonize many uses while offering fast refueling like traditional fuels. He sees it growing into a major global energy source. His work at Plug lets him contribute to that future by improving how clean energy is produced and delivered.

A Philosophy of Solvable Problems

Dan approaches every challenge with the belief that solutions exist. Even if they are not obvious at first, hands-on effort and persistence reveal the answer. He encourages his team to dive in, learn by doing, and solve problems together.

Life Outside the Lab

Originally from Pennsylvania, Dan moved to Rochester for his BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology at RIT. He lives in Henrietta with his wife Kaitlynn and daughter Penelope. His hobbies include 3D printing, CNC milling, working on mechanical projects, and mastering backyard barbecue.
