Hydrogen Infrastructure Gets a Boost: DB Cargo Unveils MEGC Rail Container for Gaseous H2 Transport

DB Cargo has teamed up with a global consortium to roll out something big for the future of clean energy: a high-pressure Multiple Element Gas Container (MEGC) built specifically for hauling gaseous hydrogen by rail. They showed it off at the 2025 transport logistic fair in Munich—and it’s already turning heads. This container packs in 1,223 kg of hydrogen at a whopping 500 bar, and it’s the first one ever greenlit for use on trains. That’s a serious breakthrough for hydrogen transport in Europe.

Hydrogen rail link taps into Europe’s clean energy goals

This isn’t just about showing off cool tech. It’s a real leap forward for building out hydrogen infrastructure across Germany and the rest of the EU—where hydrogen is shaping up to be a major player in hitting climate neutrality by 2045. Since hydrogen pipelines are still pretty limited, high-volume rail offers a solid and scalable way to move this clean fuel right now—especially to the heavy industries and transport companies that need it most.

Rail’s role in industrial decarbonization just got an upgrade

According to DB Cargo, they’re already in a position to handle roughly 20% of Germany’s future hydrogen needs by rail. This new MEGC tech only boosts that capability. Not only does it line up with the country’s national hydrogen strategy, but it also puts rail in the driver’s seat when it comes to delivering sustainable energy and pushing toward true industrial decarbonization.

Bottom line? Europe’s on the move—and now, so is its hydrogen storage. Safely. Efficiently. By train.
