ITS initiates FEED for CO2-infrastructure at the Port of Södertälje

In Sweden, Inter Terminals Sweden (ITS), a leading and independent supplier of storage and logistics services for liquid bulk energy and materials, in close collaboration with the Port of Södertälje, has announced that it has taken a "decisive step" towards establishing an open and flexible infrastructure for captured carbon dioxide in the Mälardalen region.

ITS initiates FEED for CO2-infrastructure at the Port of Södertälje

Wholly owned by Inter Pipeline Ltd, a Brookfield Infrastructure Partners company, Inter Terminals Sweden and Denmark have a total capacity of over 3 million m3 in eight liquid bulk storage terminals in Denmark and Sweden.

The project in the Port of Södertälje entails a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and permitting process to enable intermediate storage of regionally captured carbon dioxide (CO2) and loading onto vessels for further transport to permanent storage or utilization.

This initiative marks an important milestone for Inter Terminals, positioning us as a key enabler in the emerging CO₂-logistics market in Mälardalen, said Johan Zettergren, Managing Director of Inter Terminals Sweden.

Crucial for GHG reduction

The objective is to offer an open and accessible solution for all regional companies aiming to capture CO2 and seeking efficient solutions for storage or reuse.

Both Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) are seen as crucial technologies for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and creating negative emissions.

Technologies for capturing carbon dioxide emitted from industrial processes and power plants before it reaches the atmosphere, and then transporting it to safe permanent storage or utilization.

For example, the production of electro-fuels (eFuels) contributes to achieving both national and global climate goals.

The project concept is scalable and supports a phased implementation, adaptable to the development of the CCUS market in the region over the coming years.

If all goes to plan, ITS fully completed facility at the Port of Södertälje is expected to be ready and operational by 2030.

This joint initiative further strengthens Södertälje Port’s position as a hub for sustainable freight logistics and the future infrastructure for energy management in the Stockholm region, commented Måns Frostell, CEO of Port of Södertälje.
