Jönköping Energi inaugurates large-scale battery system at Torsvik CHP plant

In Sweden, municipal energy utility Jönköping Energi AB has held the inauguration of its first large-scale battery system at its waste- and biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Torsvik, outside Jönköping. The 10 MW/MWh battery system will play a crucial role in balancing the electricity grid, increasing preparedness for power outages, and supporting the green energy transition.

Jönköping Energi inaugurates large-scale battery system at Torsvik CHP plant

Sweden is undergoing rapid electrification, where the expansion of renewable electricity production needs to be supported by new solutions for power storage and flexibility.

New transmission infrastructure takes time to build, but the need for power is already here. Battery systems, such as the one at Torsvik, are viewed as crucial components in the transition to a robust and efficient electricity system.

It is with pride that I stand here today to inaugurate something that is both large in format and even greater in significance. This is the beginning of something new. We are not only building technology, we are also building expertise. Our goal is to create a strong portfolio of flexible resources together with our customers that contributes to a more sustainable and robust electricity system, said Fridolf Eskilsson, CEO of Jönköping Energi.

Prequalified for several flexibility markets

The facility is one of the fastest on the market in terms of reaction time and is prequalified for several flexibility markets.

Thanks to advanced market optimization in collaboration with Ntricity, the battery can contribute where it is needed most, when it is needed most.

This battery facility is a clear example of a solution that contributes to the energy transition and the county’s vision of a robust and fossil-free plus energy county. With new markets and business models for energy storage, battery solutions like the ones we see here today can contribute locally and regionally to relieving the electricity grid and ensuring that there is electricity to use when the need is great, said County Governor Brittis Benzler, in her inauguration address.

PSW Power & Automation supplied the battery system, and the firm has been an important catalyst for Jönköping Energi’s continued investments in flexibility, both through its own facilities and in collaboration with customers’ resources.

We are proud to deliver a 10MW/MWh battery system to Jönköping Energi. As the integration of renewable energy increases, such storage systems are becoming crucial for the stability and resilience of the electricity grid. Many thanks to Jönköping Energi for the excellent cooperation and the trust in this important project, said Johannes Tveit, Project Manager at PSW Power & Automation.
