Nordion Energi selects Wärtsilä for Port of Gothenburg bioLNG facility

The facility is part of Nordion Energi’s plan to transition the gas network to 100 percent biomethane aka renewable natural gas (RNG).

It will enable biomethane producers connected to the gas grid to reach new customers such as the shipping industry, heavy transport, and off-grid industrial users.

The liquefaction plant in Gothenburg is an important step in making the gas network more attractive to biogas producers and has already sparked increased interest in connecting to the grid. A greater number of domestic biomethane producers will both reduce the environmental impact of gas and enhance security of supply, said Carolina Wistén, Director Customer and Market at Nordion Energi.

Biomethane is a renewable fuel with a low climate impact that can replace natural gas in various processes.

Of the gas delivered through the western Sweden gas network, 39.3 percent consisted of biomethane in the first quarter of 2025.

The goal is for all gas delivered through the network to be biogas by 2030. The planned facility in the Port of Gothenburg is intended exclusively for biomethane and will enable the gas to be liquefied and then delivered to new customers.

This plant will produce 50 tonnes of bioLNG per day and will, by sharing the existing infrastructure with natural gas, offer a safe, cost-efficient, and fast path towards decarbonisation. Our technologies are well proven to deliver high uptime with reliable and safe performance, and we are extremely pleased to be working with Nordion Energi on this important project, commented Rolf Håkansson, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, Biogas.

The liquefaction plant is scheduled for delivery in September 2026, with the goal of being operational before the end of 2026.
