NOW – International Dialogue: Green Hydrogen for Decentralized Energy Systems

At the third networking meeting of the Export Initiative for Environmental Protection (EXI) of the Federal Environment Ministry in Berlin, the focus was on green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in decentralized energy supply worldwide.

On June 4, 2025, around 60 participants gathered for the third annual networking meeting of the Export Initiative for Environmental Protection (EXI) in Berlin. The EXI funding program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN) opened the event to a wider circle of participants for the first time this year. In addition to representatives of ongoing EXI funding projects, external experts from industry, research, and other funding programs were also invited.

The aim of the meeting was to promote the exchange of knowledge across project boundaries and to explore new potential for future projects together with partners from science and industry. The focus was on the EXI field of activity “Green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in decentralized energy supply,” one of the initiative’s five fields of activity. During the event, NOW GmbH and DIHK Service GmbH also renewed their cooperation agreement for strategic collaboration within the framework of EXI.

Nilgün Parker, Head of the Division for Sustainable Finance, Environment and Foreign Trade Promotion, BMUKN:

Every year, the EXI networking event brings together leading minds from the German and international green tech industry.

This demonstrates that German environmental technologies can make a decisive contribution to a reliable and climate-friendly energy supply around the world. Our EXI projects impressively demonstrate the potential of these decentralized, local solutions – supported by a strong network of committed partners worldwide.”

From idea to implementation: how can green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies be established in decentralized energy supply?

The network meeting opened with welcoming remarks from Nilgün Parker (BMUKN), Sabine Ziem-Milojevic (NOW GmbH), and Daniel Roos (ZUG gGmbH). Various EXI projects were then presented in a panel discussion on project implementation. In addition to the pilot projects Green-H2Islands (Thailand), GH2GH (Ghana), HygO (Namibia), HyTrA (South Africa), and WRAP_GH2 (Jordan), DIHK Service GmbH presented the work of the Chambers for GreenTech. The Chambers’ goal is to implement projects together with local Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHKs) that support German GreenTech companies in their market entry in partner markets. The two funding programs of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE), “H2Uppp” and “Energy Export Initiative,” then presented themselves on the panel and discussed cross-program synergies with EXI. Finally, all participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas in various workshops on how projects for decentralized energy supply using green hydrogen and fuel cell technologies can be better established in the future.
