ORLEN launches world-first multifuel tech for hydrogen and natural gas

New system allows flexible, efficient energy production to accelerate industrial decarbonisation.

ORLEN Group has introduced Multifuel, a new technology that enables the generation of electricity and heat using hydrogen, natural gas, or any combination of the two.

This first-of-its-kind solution is now entering commercial use, developed in partnership with Horus Energia. The proprietary system is designed to help industrial users transition smoothly to cleaner energy sources and cut emissions while maintaining operational flexibility.

Multifuel works as an adaptable overlay for large gas engines with capacities from 300 kWel to 2 MWel. It can be integrated into both new and existing energy generation units, boosting power efficiency by up to 5%. Compatible with a wide range of industrial applications, it is suited for use in energy hubs, local power clusters, electric vehicle charging stations, and public facilities where stable or backup power is critical.

What sets Multifuel apart is its real-time fuel switching capability. The system has independent supply lines for hydrogen and natural gas, managed by a smart control system that adjusts fuel ratios instantly without interrupting operations or lowering engine output.

Prototype tests confirmed that blending hydrogen with natural gas in varying proportions can safely raise generation efficiency by over 5% compared to standard gas engines.

ORLEN says the technology supports its broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 while advancing clean fuel adoption in Poland’s economy.
