Scapigliato and Waga Energy Italia partner to produce RNG
In Italy, Scapigliato S.r.L., a municipality-owned waste management company for the municipality of Rosignano Marittimo in Tuscany, and Waga Energy Italia, a subsidiary of France-headed landfill gas to renewable natural gas specialists Waga Energy SA, have signed an agreement to produce renewable natural gas at the Rosignano Marittimo landfill site.

This contract follows a call for tenders launched by the company in July 2024 and won by Waga Energy. As part of this agreement, Waga Energy will finance, build, and operate a purification unit on the site.
Using its patented “WAGABOX” technology to convert landfill gas (LFG) into renewable natural gas (RNG), the WAGABOX unit will be commissioned in 2027 and operated by Waga Energy for an initial period of 10 years.
The unit will have an installed production capacity of 92 GWh (about 314,000 MMBtu) of RNG per year, equivalent to the consumption of around 9,400 Italian households.
Displace fossil natural gas
The RNG produced will be injected directly into the local grid and sold by Waga Energy under a Biomethane Purchase Agreement (BPA). Revenues from the sale of RNG will be shared between Waga Energy and Scapigliato.
By reducing the use of fossil natural gas, the commissioning will avoid the emission of around 15,500 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) annually, based on the methodology defined by EU RED II using the emission factor of a standard WAGABOX unit as certified by International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).
We are proud to have signed this agreement with Scapigliato, which supports the vision of developing best practices in terms of waste management. Our entities are actively collaborating to implement the internationally patented and widespread WAGABOX technology to complete the biomethane production project in a local context. We support our customers, the community, and its residents moving toward the future. This new project confirms Waga Energy’s consolidation strategy in Italy through virtuous projects that have a significant impact on energy transition and greenhouse gas emissions, said Andrea Baldini, CEO of Waga Energy Italia.
Material recycling and energy recovery
The landfill facility operated by Scapigliato can receive more than 300,000 tonnes per annum of special non-hazardous waste and has an Integrated Environmental Permit issued by the Tuscany Region in February 2019.
The Plant Pole, which represents one of the most important waste treatment and disposal sites in the region, is managed by the company Scapigliato as a result of the concession issued by the Municipality of Rosignano Marittimo and valid until 2064 – has been developed since the early 1980s through the management of a controlled landfill facility for the disposal of municipal and special non-hazardous waste from the regional territory.
Marco Colatarci, Chairman of Scapigliato’s Board of Directors, and Alessandro Franchi, Managing Director, express “satisfaction with the agreement with Waga Energy, a leading international company in RNG production from landfills.”
This agreement confirms the development of this important sector, with both environmental and economic returns and efficiencies. And we are trusting in a speedy implementation of the project, they said.
As of today, the Scapigliato Pole, through the encouragement of material and energy recovery activities from waste, has as its main objective to ensure high standards of environmental sustainability through the adoption of innovative technologies.
