Torrent Group has inaugurated a green hydrogen production facility in Gorakhpur, marking the second such plant in India and the first in Uttar Pradesh under the state’s Green Hydrogen Policy 2024.
Developed by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, the unit is designed to produce 72 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The output will be blended into the city’s natural gas distribution network at concentrations of up to 2 percent and supplied to households, industries, and CNG stations through existing infrastructure.

Speaking at the launch, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, described hydrogen as,

The energy of the future,

Adding:

If we wish to save humanity and civilisation, we must minimise carbon emissions.

“Green energy will be crucial not just for the environment but also for reducing diseases caused by pollution.”

He also highlighted that the state’s,

Abundant water resources” provide a “competitive edge” for green hydrogen production.

The project is part of Uttar Pradesh’s target to reach one million tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity by 2028 and aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims for five million tonnes annually by 2030.
To support this goal, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has launched a ₹650 million ($7.8 million) demonstration programme to establish four Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters in Pune, Kerala, Bhubaneswar, and Jodhpur. The initiative is expected to strengthen supply chains for hydrogen technology and expand early demand.
India’s refining sector, which consumes over two million tonnes of hydrogen each year—predominantly produced from fossil fuels—is also beginning to transition. State-owned refiners have announced investments of about $23 billion in green hydrogen projects. Among them is Indian Oil Corporation’s 10,000-tonne-per-year facility at Panipat, planned for 2027, which will replace grey hydrogen currently used in desulfurisation.
Parallel efforts are underway in green ammonia, with projects in Odisha by Hygenco Green Energies and Ocior Energy projected to deliver more than two million tonnes of capacity combined.
At the Gorakhpur event, MP Ravi Kishan and MLA Pradeep Shukla described the initiative as a step toward the state’s long-term energy ambitions. The inauguration concluded with the planting of a Rudraksha sapling by the Chief Minister.
