Take a look at just six of the many amazing signs of clean energy adoption in the Southeast we’ve seen over the past few months.

Parents say electric school buses make children happier

“No child should have to breathe dirty air, especially when cleaner air is a possibility within reach.” Almost two-thirds of U.S. parents would prefer their child ride on an electric school bus than a diesel-powered one, according to a new survey. In fact, 63% of parents surveyed said they believe their child would be happier commuting to school on an electric school bus, while 68% of parents said they  believe their child would be healthier. A ‘solar school’ for foster youth boosts Georgia’s labor pool

Like many young people who age out of foster care, Michael Williams struggled to find his footing as an adult. That’s when he turned to the Atlanta-based nsoro Foundation, a nonprofit that supports those transitioning out of state care. Williams was among the first four graduates of the foundation’s solar installation training program, a joint venture between the foundation and an Atlanta-based solar power company. Read more.

SEEED tackles Tennessee’s housing gap with green homes

SEEED, a Knoxville-based nonprofit, is building sustainable homes using green technologies such as solar panels, backup solar batteries, micro communication grids, concrete walls, and smart home technology. These award-winning homes are then sold below market value to low-income families, allowing them to start building generational wealth and save on future energy costs. Read more.

One rural N.C. mayor bets big on clean energy to uplift his hometown

“I’m super excited about what’s possible.” In the rural, largely Black community of Enfield, North Carolina, Mayor Robinson has big plans to ease its residents’ sky-high energy burdens. A planned solar farm would meet most of the town’s electricity needs. A solar-powered resilience hub would serve as a gathering place during emergencies. A weatherization resource center would help residents apply for free energy-efficiency improvements — saving residents money in a town where even small homes’ electric bills can average $650 a month. A former Navy Seal’s Tampa firm brings solar power to a Manatee arts school

A former Navy Seal is helping Florida’s Manatee School for the Arts go solar. Steve Rutherford’s Tampa Bay Solar is leading the installation of 3,000 solar panels across seven buildings. The project, which will generate enough electricity to power 320 homes for a full year, is expected to slash the school’s utility costs by 90%, paying for itself in seven years. Rutherford’s company has previously installed solar at Tampa’s Florida Aquarium, a Miami senior living facility, Dunedin’s City Hall, and more. Read more.

BP Pulse brings electric vehicle chargers to Waffle Houses across the South

Waffle Houses across the Southeast, including in Florida and Georgia, will soon be serving up some EV charging. The EV charging arm of bp has announced a new partnership with the diner chain to bring DC fast chargers to Waffle Houses across the South, the first bunch of which will go live next year. Open 24/7 and often situated along major highways, these diners make an ideal location for expanding EV charging. Read more.
