Groundbreaking held for BECCS @ STHLM

In Sweden, municipal energy major Stockholm Exergi AB has held a ground breaking ceremony in Värta Harbour to mark the start of construction for one of the world's largest bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) facilities.

Groundbreaking held for BECCS @ STHLM

The project, known as BECCS @ STHLM, will separate, capture, and liquefy carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gases from Stockholm Exergi’s biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant Värtaverket in Stockholm and is expected to be fully operational in 2028.

At full capacity, the BECCS plant in Värta Harbour is projected to capture up to 800,000 tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide (bioCO2) per annum, resulting in so-called negative emissions.

After capture, the carbon dioxide will be temporarily stored and then shipped to Norway, where it will be permanently stored in the bedrock under the North Sea, in collaboration with the Northern Lights project, a joint venture between oil, gas, and energy majors Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

Six years ago, we launched a pilot to explore carbon capture at our combined heat and power plant. Many people have worked hard for a long time to get us to where we are today, not just here at Stockholm Exergi. Without support from the Swedish government, the EU, and frontrunners like Microsoft, this project wouldn’t be possible. Today’s groundbreaking is the beginning of what could become an entirely new competitive industry for Sweden and the Nordics, said Anders Egelrud, CEO of Stockholm Exergi, in his remarks reflecting on the journey from vision to reality.
