Houpu Clean Energy Group is teaming up with a group of heavy-hitters to bring green hydrogen to life in Beihai, Guangxi. The consortium just scored the EPC contract for the Three Gorges Beihai Green Hydrogen Production Demonstration Project, and it’s backed by none other than China Three Gorges Renewables.
Bringing Hydrogen Production to the Next Level
This isn’t your average renewable energy project. Spread across 9.5 hectares, this site is shaping up to be a cutting-edge testing ground for off-grid hydrogen technologies. The plan? Combine distributed solar power (PV), energy storage, and megawatt-scale AEM water electrolysis — all to produce, store, and use green hydrogen, including for vehicle refueling.
It’s all part of a much bigger picture. China wants to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen a year from renewable sources by 2025. This project is designed to be more than just a standalone facility — it’s a fully functional and replicable model meant to boost localized innovation, help the environment, and build out a full hydrogen infrastructure in the region.
A Collaborative Effort to Drive Sustainable Energy
The project brings together some serious brainpower. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is offering technical support, Shanghai Investigation, Design & Research Institute is handling the planning and design, and Shanghai Hydrogen Luan Technology is lending their expertise in hydrogen systems. Each player is helping to push China closer to the front of the global race for sustainable energy and green hydrogen dominance.
