Vianode and FAAM demonstrate anode graphite recycling from battery production scrap
Norwegian battery materials company Vianode and Italian battery cell manufacturer FAAM have demonstrated that graphite from FAAM's anode production scrap can be recycled into anode-grade graphite. The two companies are expanding the collaboration to scale the process toward industrial deployment and integrate more recycled graphite into battery production.
In a development and qualification program, Vianode processed graphite concentrate recovered from the scrap and converted it into recycled anode-grade graphite. Testing showed electrochemical performance comparable to virgin graphite, the companies report. The release gives no test data, recovery yield or production volume.
Vianode describes graphite as a critical mineral with one of the world's most concentrated supply chains. According to Vianode and FAAM, graphite, unlike battery metals such as nickel, cobalt and copper, remains one of the battery industry's most complex recycling challenges, and stringent purity and performance requirements have kept large-scale recovery and reuse of battery-grade graphite limited.
We covered Vianode's launch of a recycled graphite product in April 2025. In June 2026, the company also signed a memorandum of understanding with Aachen-based recycler cylib, under which cylib could supply recovered graphite concentrate for Vianode to validate in anode materials.
"By combining our manufacturing expertise with Vianode's advanced materials technology, we are demonstrating that production scrap can be reintegrated into the process without compromising performance," said Andrea Civitillo, CEO of FAAM.
"This collaboration demonstrates that graphite recycling can be both high-performing and scalable," said Stefan Bergold, Vianode's Chief Commercial Officer. "By leveraging our proprietary graphite technology, we can return production scrap directly back into the battery value chain without compromising quality."
