Geologic Hydrogen Exploration: Michigan Invests $7.5 Million in Clean Energy Research

The State of Michigan has put its money where its mouth is, committing US$7.5 million through the Make It in Michigan Competitiveness Fund to dive into the exploration and research of geologic hydrogen under a new statewide initiative. This program, managed by the Michigan Infrastructure Office, aims to map, characterize, and drill test wells in key subsurface formations throughout the Lower Peninsula. The goal? To uncover and utilize naturally occurring hydrogen. With this move, Michigan is stepping up as a frontrunner in the innovation of hydrogen production and hydrogen infrastructure.

Statewide Effort Builds Regulatory Readiness

Kicked off by a governor’s directive earlier this year, the Michigan Geologic Hydrogen Exploration and Preparedness Initiative represents a collaborative, whole-of-government approach. Agencies have been called to coordinate on everything from regulatory frameworks to workforce training and environmental assessments before any drilling gets underway. This isn’t just a random patch job; it lays the groundwork for responsible development, making sure future wells meet all safety and environmental standards—think well design to pipeline permitting. The team includes the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, the Public Service Commission, the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, among others. Together, they’ll put together detailed readiness reports and draft policies to simplify future permitting processes and workforce prep.
