Tata Motors: 1 in 5 Cars Registered in October Was Electric

Electric vehicles accounted for 20.2% of Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle registrations in October 2026. Mahindra reached 13.2%, as India’s electric car registrations grew nearly 75% despite a contraction in the overall passenger vehicle market.
One in every five passenger vehicles registered under Tata Motors in October 2026 was electric.
That is a significant milestone for India’s largest electric passenger vehicle manufacturer, particularly at a time when the broader passenger vehicle market is facing pressure.
The company recorded 14,552 electric passenger vehicle registrations during the month, out of 73,002 total passenger vehicle registrations. This put the electric share at approximately 19.9%, or nearly one in every five Tata cars registered in the country.
The figures are based on the VAHAN registration snapshot reported by Autocar Professional on November 1, 2026. CarLelo and ThatsmyEV have also reported the same Tata EV registration figure and broadly consistent overall registration numbers.
Tata’s EV contribution reaches almost 20%
The October numbers offer a useful indication of how much electric vehicles now contribute to Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle business.
| Registration category | October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Total passenger vehicle registrations | 73,002 |
| Electric passenger vehicle registrations | 14,552 |
| Non-EV registrations | 58,450 |
| EV share of total registrations | 19.9% |
In other words, nearly 20 out of every 100 Tata passenger vehicles registered in October were electric.
The remaining 80.1% came from the company’s internal combustion engine and other non-electric models. This is important because Tata’s EV growth is taking place alongside a much larger conventional vehicle business, rather than replacing it entirely.
The figures also show why Tata’s electric vehicle performance deserves attention beyond its monthly EV ranking. Electric models are now contributing a meaningful share of the company’s total passenger vehicle registrations.
Punch.ev crosses the 5,000-unit monthly milestone
One of the notable developments behind Tata’s October performance was the Tata Punch.ev.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles said the Punch.ev crossed 5,000 sales in a single month in October, becoming the first standalone electric model in its portfolio to achieve that milestone.
The development points to the growing importance of the electric SUV and compact SUV segments in the Indian market. The Punch.ev sits in a more accessible vehicle category than some of the larger electric SUVs, giving Tata another product to address buyers considering a move from conventional cars to electric mobility.
However, the 5,000-unit milestone should be read as a company-reported model sales figure. It is not the same measurement as the 14,552 total Tata EV registrations recorded in the VAHAN snapshot. Sales, dispatches and registrations can differ because of timing and reporting cut-offs.
What the October milestone means for Tata Motors
Tata Motors registering nearly one electric vehicle for every five passenger vehicles in October is a significant indicator of the changing composition of its business.
The company is no longer relying on electric vehicles only as a separate growth category. EVs have become a substantial part of its monthly passenger vehicle registrations.
The Punch.ev crossing 5,000 monthly sales also suggests that demand is not limited to a single flagship electric SUV. More accessible electric models are contributing to the company’s volumes.
The bigger test now is whether Tata can sustain this contribution while addressing supply constraints and delivering a consistent ownership experience.
October’s numbers establish the scale of Tata’s EV presence. The coming months will show whether the company can turn that position into sustained growth.
