Groundbreaking held for Eskilstuna Biogas bioLNG

Eskilstuna Biogas is a collaboration between RoPax shipping company Rederi AB Gotland (Gotlandsbolaget), Andion CH4 Renewables, and Equitix New Generation Fund (Equitix), and marks an important milestone in Gotlandsbolaget’s long-term investment in fossil-free shipping.

The company operates the Destination Gotland shipping lines between mainland Sweden and the Island of Gotland, operating up to 21 trips per day during the summer season. On an annual basis, it carries close to two million passengers and is the transport route for hundreds of thousands of cars and freight year-round.

The fact that we are now putting the shovel in the ground shows that we are not waiting for the future – we are investing in it. Liquid biomethane is a solution that exists here and now, and which will play a decisive role in our energy transition, said Mikael Razola, Head of Gotland Tech Development, which is part of Gotlandsbolaget.

Gotlandsbolaget announced the investment in December 2024. The plant is expected to be operational by the end of 2026. The annual production capacity is approximately 5,400 tonnes of liquefied biomethane (bioLNG).

Through a ten-year offtake agreement, Gotlandsbolaget has secured the majority of production for Gotlandtrafiken, which will correspond to approximately 10 percent of Destination Gotland’s annual fuel needs.

Over ten years, this is expected to reduce fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 100,000 tonnes compared to the equivalent amount of fossil liquefied natural gas (LNG).

We are pleased to be able to increase access to high-quality biomethane and at the same time, secure deliveries for our operations. This is an important step in reducing our climate footprint and increasing security of supply, said Henry Hammarström, Project Manager/Energy Expert at Gotland Tech Development.

Gotlandsbolaget’s Head of Growth, Anders Boman, also participated in the ceremony and highlighted the value of the collaboration.

This is an example of what happens when shipping companies, technology players, and investors find each other. To succeed in the transformation of shipping, both will and workshop are needed – and now we are literally standing on the construction site, remarked Anders Boman.
