Natural Hydrogen Production Gains Momentum: Primary Hydrogen Stakes Northumberland Project in Nova Scotia

This month, Primary Hydrogen Corp. has announced it's acquisition of the Northumberland Natural Hydrogen Project in Cumberland County, Nova Scotia. They’ve snagged two exploration licenses (58173 and 58174) covering about 72 claims across roughly 1,166 hectares, situated right along the northern edge of the Cumberland Basin. This area, nestled between the coastal towns of Northport and Pugwash, is super accessible via Route 6 and is buzzing with natural hydrogen exploration activity.
The Geological Context
The Cumberland Basin is quite fascinating, featuring over seven kilometers of Late Carboniferous sedimentary layers like the Cumberland, Windsor, and Mabou groups, all resting on ancient basement rocks. We’ve got deep-seated faults, like the Cobequid-Chedabucto, shifting these layers around, while salt diapirs in the Windsor Formation are creating traps and anticlinal structures. Remarkably, these features are similar to where successful geologic hydrogen sources have been found in other regions, where reactions involving water and rock, such as serpentinization, help generate molecular hydrogen that moves into reservoirs and gets trapped under impermeable seals.
